"It is better to collect metal then it is to watch it rust."
Domenico Racco founded Racco Iron & Metal in 1984 and continues his active role in the development and future growth of the business. While managing the scrap metal side of the business, Domenico decided to shift the company’s focus to include a comprehensive service that would benefit both the client and his company.
Traditionally, scrap yards are equipped to collect and process ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Customers would simply transport their materials to the yard, weigh in, and weigh out, and the transaction was complete. Domenico felt that this process lacked efficiency and did not meet the needs of his larger accounts, specifically hydro companies.
In 1989, Racco Iron & Metal launched their deconstruction and reclamation (D&R) service. The service was catered specifically to hydro companies and provided them with a turn-key solution that would include the dismantling, removing, and recycling of damaged or obsolete industrial transformers.
This comprehensive service saves the hydro companies valuable time and effort. The D&R service allows the hydro crews to focus their efforts on configuring the new unit for installation while the damaged unit is being deconstructed and prepared for transportation. Essentially, the teams work simultaneously. In addition, the deconstructed unit is removed in smaller pieces, resulting in safer transportation and fewer complications.
This process earned Domenico and Racco Iron & Metal a solid reputation in deconstruction and removal of industrial transformers. Domenico’s future plans are to expand the service coast-to-coast and develop safer and more ecological ways to do so.
